AI being addressed at SXSW and on the World Stage

People have been dancing around it for years but now that the Entrepreneur Bros set on social media have been losing their minds over Chat GPT, the music community and other communities in business are getting more forward about throwing down the gauntlet as to what this really means.

On March 16, in Austin at SXSW RIAA and 30 other groups launced the Campaign to Support Human Creativity. The goal of the Human Artistry Campaign is to ensure that AI will not replace or “erode” human culture and artistry, according to a press release on Thursday (March 16). "Human artistry is irreplicable. Recent developments in AI are remarkable, but we have seen the costs before of rushing heedlessly forward without real thought or respect for law and rights. Our principles are designed to chart a healthy path for AI innovation that enhances and rewards human artistry, creativity, and performance,” added RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier. NMPA President & CEO David Israelite added that “incredible music originates from individuals.” Isrealite also wrote an op ed in Billboard recently reiterating the importance that Copyrights be for HUMAN CREATIONS ONLY.

The Human Artistry Campaign upholds these tenets:

1. TECHNOLOGY HAS LONG EMPOWERED HUMAN EXPRESSION, AND AI WILL BE NO DIFFERENT

2. HUMAN CREATED WORKS WILL CONTINUE TO PLAY AN ESSENTIAL ROLE IN OUR LIVES

3. USE OF COPYRIGHTED WORKS, AND THE USE OF VOICES AND LIKENESSES OF PROFESSIONAL PERFORMERS, REQUIRES AUTHORIZATION, LICENSING, & COMPLIANCE WITH ALL RELEVANT STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS

4. GOVERNMENTS SHOULD NOT CREATE NEW COPYRIGHT OR OTHER IP EXEMPTIONS THAT ALLOW AI DEVELOPERS TO EXPLOIT CREATORS WITHOUT PERMISSION OR COMPENSATION

5. COPYRIGHT SHOULD ONLY PROTECT THE UNIQUE VALUE OF HUMAN INTELLECTUAL CREATIVITY

6. TRUSTWORTHINESS AND TRANSPARENCY ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE SUCCESS OF AI AND PROTECTION OF CREATORS

7. CREATORS' INTERESTS MUST BE REPRESENTED IN POLICYMAKING

Then in a turn of events, not two weeks later, some of the most prominent business leaders and educators worldwide called for a 6 month moratorium on development in AI labs, past what Chat GPT is already able to do.

The letter states that “AI systems with human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity,” including the increased spread of propaganda and fake news as well as automation leading to widespread job loss. “Should we develop nonhuman minds that might eventually outnumber, outsmart, obsolete and replace us? Should we risk loss of control of our civilization?” the letter asks.

These leaders signed an open letter that you can view here.
